I just read in the newbie guide that to upgrade weapons, you need to mine and such. Is there a way to get upgrades without mining? Perhaps buying them from an NPC or something?

Ok here is the specs on upgrading.
You need an "upgrade tool"
A talic of your choice and gems like topaz ruby crystal and obsidian.
You can get gems and talics from many different ways.
1. process raw ore. (+3 is the best to get gems and talics)
2. fighting monsters in the crag mine (the more powerful the npc monster the better change to get a rare gem or talic)
3. Killing a Pit Boss and taking it's drops for your self.

So basically, it's better to not worry about weapon upgrades till you're at least lvl 20? Guess I better look into mining some.

lvl 35 is when you will nead or want to upgrade. And FYI it will cost a lot of $$$

Was stated in RF magazine, that using all the same teir gems will give you a slightly better chance then mixing and matching the teirs.
